As the debate over the nature of health care delivery in this country continues, with some in favorite of a Medicare type system run by the government and available to all citizens, others fear that the current flaws in the existing Medicare system are a major warning sign. Another system wraught with flaws seems to be the one run by states and funded by the federal government, known as Medicaid. Last year alone, the program made over $19 billion in improper payments, a huge amount of waste. And while the Medicare system is highly prone to fraud, studies show that these overpayments were actually the result of error, and not fraudulent activity. Much of these mistakes have been traced back to poor documentation and procedural error, begging the question, if our states and government can’t handle the current smaller programs, how will they handle a much larger one?
