Lose Your Job, Lose Your Insurance

The problem with having health insurance linked to employment is that as the unemployment rate across the country surges upward, so does the unemployment rate. COBRA is health insurance coverage available to people after they have been let go, but unfortunately it is so expensive that it can consume as much as 80-90% of unemployment benefits. Medicaid is an alternative for some, but state budgets are being strained to the breaking point trying to provide for all of the people who now qualify. The problem is reaching desperate levels in Florida where COBRA is particularly expensive and Medicaid is seeing its highest enrollment since its inception. It may come down to federal assistance in the form of Obama’s proposed stimulus package to prevent disaster. But what will happen if that assistance does not come?
