Recently, volunteers with the American Cancer Society made a trip to Tallahassee to show their support for the recent Tobacco User Fee/Tax bill that has been filed for Florida. Supporters of the bill advocate that the increase in price for tobacco products will have a number of effects on Floridians. Firstly, the rise in cost will encourage many current smokers to drop the habit, which will likely save thousands of lives and countless dollars spent on health related expenses for all the health problems tobacco is responsible for causing. They are hoping the cost will deter many young people from picking up the habit in the first place. Also, the revenue the tax will raise can be used to fund health insurance programs for the millions who need it here in Florida, especially children. Florida’s current tax is a meager .34 cents and has been proposed to be raised by a dollar. Do you agree with advocates of the tax?
I think they should raise them and use the taxes for the children.
