Florida Providers See Major Drop in Patient Numbers

As the recession continues and more Floridians find themselves unemployed and without health insurance, many people are choosing to cut back, delay, or even forego completely their routine health care. South Florida providers have seen as much as a 30% decrease in the number of patients they would normally see. Many of these patients have turned to free clinics, emergency rooms, and other charitable sources for care. People who have continued to utilize their primary care physicians are more often asking for discounts, or a delay in payment for services rendered. And as health care officials confirm, in many cases, they are getting what they ask for. On the other hand, the need for mental health services has gone up noticeably as people struggle to cope with the situation. How far reaching will the impact of this recession be on health care providers?
