The Miami Herald recently reported that Florida officials may be working on a law that would ban gender biased premiums in the realm of health insurance. It has been a long standing practice that women are required to pay higher premiums for the same quality of health care, when compared to men of equal health standing. Insurance companies have defended this practice by claiming that women are more likely to use their insurance in terms of taking advantage of preventative care as well as seeking care more often when ill. Basically, women are punished for taking an active role in their health and wellness. Sean Shaw, the state’s insurance consumer advocate, is pushing for a bill to ban the practice, but he has yet to find a sponsor for the legislation. Do you think there will ever be an end to this type of gender discrimination in insurance?
