Health Insurance is a growing national issue: Health care costs are forcing people into financial ruin. The problem encourages a push to offer medical coverage to the roughly 60 million uninsured and under-insured American citizens. A Harvard University study a few months ago found that 65 percent of bankruptcy cases in the United States in 2008 were caused by or provoked by medical bills. That’s up from 50 percent in 2001 and things seem to be getting worse. Health insurance for those who are unemployed is impossible to afford. An article in South Florida Sun-Sentinel features the case of Dorothy Carmona, a self-employed cancer patient who was forced to file bankruptcy as a result of economic recession and very expensive health care bills. Her cancer got progressively worse after filing bankruptcy. Can the rise of health care insurance and cost make you sick?
