In Brevard County, FL, the local hospital system has been offering gas cards valued at $100 in exchange for bills from rival hospitals. This is being done in an effort to find out what their competitors are charging for the same treatments and procedures. The hospital chain plans to make the information available to consumers on the internet, allowing the cost concious to comparison shop when seeking medical care. Several organizations have been working to make this information available for quite some time, and in January, a new law was even passed to require hospitals to give patients an estimate of cost before submitting to treatment. Will health care become a consumer driven industry similar to shopping for an automobile or any other major purchase? Is this the best way to keep prices down, by stimulating competition?

Competition is usually always better… we’ll see what happens.
Sounds like a good idea. I just hope Walmart doesn’t open a hospital.
